As I have always wanted to visit Denmark my wish still has not been fulfilled. I almost visited Danish realm back in 1993, when I was in Nederland, but lack of time prevented me from doing it. Luckily, Cost 248 showed up and gave me an opportunity to discover it. Though surfing the Net is not the same as being there but still provides lots of fun and useful information.
Denmark is not very known in Slovenia as most West European countries are, and this fact stimulated me to "dig in" as much as possible. I hope I did it right.
Shortly after connecting to WWW, I found out Danish home page, which was my starting point. With its content I could make the first comparison with my country. Denmark is slightly bigger than twice the size of Slovenia and has two and a half times more citizens. I picture it as a rather flat country (like Nederland) with no "skyscaping" hills. But I am almost sure that there is one hill higher than others, and I would like to find out its altitude. Climate is opposite to Slovenia, where winter is cold and summer is hot. People are spread all over the country yet concentrated in Copenhagen, which is not only the capital but also a hub of Denmark. There is going to be a cultural project next year and it is a pity not to be present. I would especially like to see theaters and listen to classical music. While I am talking about art, I would like to point out that I enjoyed looking at Karen Blixen's pictures at her museum and an explanation was in English language, whereas I can not say the same for National Museum. Unfortunately, I came across many interesting topics written only in Danish. But it did not bother me much because there were far too many other things to discover and were also attracting.
One of them are universities. It seems to me that two cities are dominant in heightening the educational level - Alborg and Kobenhavn, although there are universities elsewhere. I liked the links to libraries, especially to Gopher's Finance Library.
Speaking of finance, let me now turn to my favour subject, and that is Economics. You might ask me why is my favorite. Well, I study it, that is why. And Denmark has some interesting figures to discuss.
First of all I was impressed to find out that it has (or had) the highest returns in agriculture per capita. That is, of course, only happening in "primary" Denmark not in other two parts of Kingdom: Faroe Islands and Greenland. Things are totally different there. While Denmark had national product per capita over 18,000 US dollars Greenland had only half of it and national product real growth rate still decreases. Faroe Islands are doing better but still below Denmark. Faroese unemployment rate is almost unbelievable low - only 2.5% but furthermore their external debt per capita is extremely high. I also wonder how much money have you spent on 130 airports in whole realm...
For ending my theme about figures I would like to praise something - and that is keeping up-to-date exchange rate. This is of utmost importance for traveling, which is my next topic.
As I pointed out before, I would like to go to Denmark one day but before the journey I can assure myself that everything is in order by reading the Travel Information. One of the most useful information is the address of Danish Embassy. Yet there has not been further information for other countries the US citizens have their own pieces of data.
Travelers can also learn some beneficial words for making first contacts with natives and they do not even have to speak English because the author keeps the pages in three foreign languages.
So, to summarize my view on Denmark, I should tell that I found a great pleasure in retrieving documents. Denmark is definitely not a newcomer in Internet and I certainly learned a lot.
For the very end I have got only few words to say:
Mange Tak, Kongeriget Danmark, and Farvel!!!
